Wildlife Highlights of Arusha NP

While not a Big Five destination (no lions or rhinos), Arusha NP offers unique sightings:

  • Black-and-White Colobus Monkeys: The park's flagship species, easily spotted in the forests with their flowing white tails.
  • Blue Monkeys: Also common in the forested areas.
  • Giraffes: Commonly seen browsing throughout the park.
  • Buffaloes & Zebras: Often found grazing in open areas near Ngurdoto Crater or Momella Lakes.
  • Antelopes: Bushbuck are frequently seen in the forest; waterbuck near the lakes.
  • Birds: Flamingos (seasonal) on Momella Lakes, plus Turacos, Trogons, bee-eaters, raptors, and numerous water birds.
  • Note: Leopards are present but extremely shy and rarely sighted.

Key Areas & Attractions

  • Mount Meru: A stunning dormant volcano offering challenging multi-day treks (separate from park visits). Its lower slopes form part of the park's ecosystem.
  • Momella Lakes: A series of seven shallow alkaline lakes, each with varying colours, attracting different bird species, including flamingos. Canoeing is a popular activity here.
  • Ngurdoto Crater: A smaller, caldera often called "Little Ngorongoro." While vehicle access to the crater floor is prohibited, viewpoints along the rim offer scenic vistas and chances to spot wildlife below.
  • Montane Forest: Covers much of the lower slopes, home to colobus and blue monkeys, bushbucks, and diverse birdlife. Ideal for walking safaris.
  • Fig Tree Arch: A unique natural archway formed by a parasitic fig tree growing around its host, large enough for a vehicle to drive through.

Best Time to Visit Arusha National Park

Arusha National Park can be rewarding year-round:

Dry Season (June - October)
  • Pleasant weather, less humidity.
  • Wildlife may be easier to spot in thinner vegetation.
Wet / Green Season (November - May)
  • Lush, green scenery.
  • Excellent bird watching with migratory species present.
  • Clearer views of Kilimanjaro often occur from December to February.
