Wildlife Highlights of Manyara

Lake Manyara's varied habitats support a surprising diversity of wildlife:

  • Tree-Climbing Lions: While not guaranteed, Manyara is famous for this unusual behaviour, often seen resting in sausage or acacia trees.
  • Baboons: Home to some of Africa's largest troops, offering fascinating social interactions. Blue monkeys are also common in the forest.
  • Elephants: Present year-round, often seen browsing in the woodlands or near the water.
  • Birds: A key attraction. Thousands of flamingos feed in the algae-rich lake, alongside pelicans, storks, cormorants, hornbills, and numerous forest species.
  • Other Mammals: Expect to see hippos, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, impalas, warthogs, and various smaller mammals like dik-diks and mongooses. Leopards are present but very elusive.

Best Time to Visit Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara offers good game viewing throughout the year, but specific interests might favour certain seasons:

Dry Season (June - October)
  • Best for general game viewing as animals gather near the lake and rivers.
  • Thinner vegetation can make spotting animals easier.
  • Flamingo numbers can fluctuate; may be lower during driest months.
Wet / Green Season (November - May)
  • Scenically beautiful with lush green landscapes.
  • Peak bird watching season: Migratory birds are present.
  • Often higher concentrations of flamingos.
  • Possible rain showers (heaviest Apr-May), but usually doesn't disrupt activities significantly.
