Wildlife Highlights of Tarangire

While elephants are the stars, Tarangire supports a wide array of fascinating wildlife:

  • Elephants: Sightings of large breeding herds are common, sometimes hundreds strong near the river.
  • Predators: Lions are frequently seen, occasionally lounging in sausage trees. Leopards and cheetahs are present but more elusive. Wild dogs are sometimes spotted.
  • Herbivores: Zebra, wildebeest (resident populations), giraffe, waterbuck, impala, buffalo, warthog are abundant. Look for fringe-eared oryx and gerenuk in drier areas.
  • Birds: A hotspot with resident and migratory species. Look for eagles, vultures, hornbills, weavers, kingfishers, and the endemic Ashy Starling.
  • Other Sightings: Pythons are sometimes seen in trees near swamps. Various mongoose species and smaller mammals abound.

Best Time to Visit Tarangire

Dry Season (June - October)
  • Peak wildlife viewing: This is the absolute best time.
  • Animals concentrate along the Tarangire River as other water sources dry up.
  • Vegetation is sparse, making spotting easier.
  • Skies are generally clear, weather pleasant.
Wet / Green Season (November - May)
  • Beautiful lush green landscapes and stunning baobabs.
  • Excellent bird watching: Migratory species arrive.
  • Many animals give birth during this period.
  • Lower visitor numbers and potentially lower prices.
  • Wildlife disperses more widely. Rain can make some tracks muddy (especially Apr-May).

  • Game Drives: The core activity, exploring diverse areas in search of wildlife, particularly along the river and around swamps like Silale.
  • Walking Safaris: Offered by some camps located in specific zones, providing an intimate bush experience with an armed ranger.
