Chemka hot springs, also called Kikuletwa, is a pool of clear turquoise spring water surrounded by fig trees in the dry landscape between Moshi and Arusha. The water is warm and calm, with a rope swing and shaded spots to relax, and it is one of the most popular day trips in northern Tanzania.

It makes an easy half-day or full-day outing before or after a safari or a Kilimanjaro climb.

What to expect

The spring water is warm and clear, deep enough to swim in at the centre and shallow at the edges. Giant fig tree roots hang over the pool, and a rope swing lets you drop into the water. There are small shelters, loungers and local vendors selling snacks and drinks. The atmosphere is relaxed, and families and groups of friends spend hours there.

How to get there

The springs lie in the Kikuletwa area, about an hour and a half from Moshi and roughly two hours from Arusha, on a mostly sealed road followed by a dirt track. Because the last section is rough, we recommend going with a driver. We can combine the springs with Materuni Waterfalls or with a stop on the way to a safari.

Best time and tips

Weekdays are quieter than weekends and holidays. Go in the morning for the clearest water and the best light. Bring a swimsuit, a towel, water shoes, sunscreen and a waterproof bag for your phone. Leave valuables at your hotel.

Is it clean and safe?

The water is natural spring water, and the area is managed by the local community. Watch your belongings, wear shoes on the rocks and supervise children near the deeper water and the rope swing. Local guides at the site can help.

Making the most of Chemka

The springs are busiest at weekends and holidays, when local families come to picnic and swim. Visit on a weekday for a quieter pool. Take a picnic or buy food from the local vendors, and allow two or three hours for swimming and relaxing. The drive is long, so combine the springs with Materuni or a stop at a coffee farm.

Respecting the spring

The springs are a community resource. Take your litter with you, do not use soap or lotion in the water and follow the instructions of the site staff. Your respect helps the local community keep the place clean and beautiful.

Photography at Chemka

The colour of the water is the main attraction, a bright turquoise that changes with the light. Mid-morning, when the sun is high, gives the strongest colour. Bring a waterproof case for your phone and take pictures from the bank and from the water. Respect other visitors’ privacy when you photograph.
