A honeymoon in Tanzania pairs the wildlife of the Serengeti with the white sand and warm sea of Zanzibar. Days begin with a quiet game drive at sunrise, and end with dinner under the stars. Then a short flight takes you to the beach for a few days of rest.

Our honeymoon safaris start from USD 1,900 per person and are planned around privacy, comfort and a pace that gives you time for each other.

The classic safari and beach honeymoon

The most popular honeymoon plan is four to seven nights on safari followed by three to five nights on Zanzibar. The safari builds the excitement, with a night in the Serengeti, a morning in the Ngorongoro Crater and a quiet bush dinner. The beach gives you time to rest. Flights from the northern parks to Zanzibar are short, so you can be on the sand the day after your last game drive.

Romance on safari

These are the touches that couples remember:

Choosing the right time

The dry months from June to October are best for wildlife, and the Mara River crossings in the north peak from July to October. January and February are warm and green, with calves everywhere on the southern plains. Zanzibar is hot and humid from December to February and has heavy rain in April and May, so plan the beach for the dry months if possible. Our best time to visit guide covers each month.

Where to stay on Zanzibar

The northern beaches of Nungwi and Kendwa have swimmable water at all tides and lively sunsets. The east coast, around Paje, Matemwe and Jambiani, is quieter and has tide-driven beaches, great for kite surfing and a slower pace. Stone Town is worth a night or a day trip for its history. A sample 9 night honeymoon

Nights 1 to 2: Tarangire

An easy start with elephants and a lodge with a view of the river, a quiet place to recover from the flight.

Nights 3 to 5: the Serengeti

Three nights in a small camp in the Serengeti, with a balloon flight at sunrise and a private bush dinner.

Night 6: Ngorongoro crater rim

A night on the rim of the caldera, with a morning in the crater and a flight to the coast.

Nights 7 to 9: Zanzibar

A beach villa or boutique hotel on the northern or eastern coast, with time for the spa, the sea and a sunset dhow cruise.

Budget tips for a honeymoon

Spend on the places where it matters: a camp in the right area of the Serengeti, and the first nights on the beach. Save on the middle: a comfortable lodge at Karatu or the crater rim does not need to be the most luxurious. Travel in shoulder months, such as June or November, for lower prices, and ask us whether a package that includes the flights between the parks is cheaper than booking them separately.

Marriage and legal matters

If you want to marry in Tanzania, speak to us early. Civil ceremonies require documents and notice periods, and we can recommend people who arrange vow renewals and beach blessings in Zanzibar. For most honeymooners, a quiet private dinner and a surprise from the lodge staff are the best touches.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do we need for a honeymoon safari?

Seven to ten days works well: four or five days on safari and three to five days on Zanzibar.

Is a hot air balloon safari worth it?

Many couples say it is the highlight of the trip. The flight lasts about an hour at dawn and ends with a champagne breakfast. It is an optional extra on most of our safaris.

Can you arrange a special surprise?

Yes. Let us know about anniversaries or proposals, and we will talk to the camp about a special dinner, a cake or a quiet arrangement.

Do you recommend a private or luxury safari?

Both are popular. A private vehicle is the key, because it lets you set the pace. Luxury camps add comfort and privacy.

Is Zanzibar safe for honeymooners?

Yes. The resorts are safe and welcoming. Tanzania is a conservative country, so dress modestly in Stone Town and in villages, and respect local customs.

What is the best month for a honeymoon?

June to October for dry weather on both the safari and the beach, and January to February for warm weather and calving season.
