Three popular 3 day routes
Tarangire, Manyara and Ngorongoro
The easiest 3 day plan is Tarangire on day one, Lake Manyara or a Maasai village on day two and the Ngorongoro Crater on day three. It has short driving days and plenty of wildlife.
Serengeti and Ngorongoro by road
A longer drive on day one takes you through the Ngorongoro highlands into the Serengeti. Day two is a full day in the Serengeti, and day three is the crater on the way back. The drives are long, but this is the cheapest way to see the Serengeti on a 3 day budget.
Fly-in Serengeti
A flight from Arusha to the Serengeti saves a day of driving. With a flight you can have two full game drive days in the Serengeti and return the same day or the next morning.
What a 3 day safari costs
A joining safari, where the vehicle is shared with other travellers, is the lowest-cost option. A private 3 day safari with comfortable lodges costs more, but you control the schedule. The price depends on the season and the group size, and all park fees are included.
Is 3 days enough for the Serengeti?
It is enough to see the big cats, elephants and giraffes, but not to follow the Great Migration. If the migration is your priority, plan at least five days so you have time to find the herds. See our Great Migration page for where the herds are each month.
Joining or private for 3 days?
On three days the cost difference between a joining safari and a private safari is large. A joining safari is a good choice if you are travelling alone or on a budget and do not mind sharing. A private safari makes more sense for couples and families who want to choose their own pace, particularly if they are paying for lodges. We will quote both so you can compare.
What to expect on the long drive days
The drive from Arusha to the Serengeti is long, and the road through the Ngorongoro highlands is scenic but slow in places. Plan for six to eight hours in the vehicle on day one, with stops at the crater rim, a lunch and a photo opportunity at the Serengeti gate. A flight is the alternative, and it gives you an extra game drive on each of the days.
Is 3 days enough for first-time visitors?
Many travellers book three days because it is all they have, and they are happy with the result. If you can, add a night, because two nights in the Serengeti, not one, make the difference between a hurried visit and a satisfying one.
Day by day: a 3 day Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari
Day 1: Arusha to the Serengeti
You leave Arusha early, pass Lake Manyara and climb to the Ngorongoro highlands, where you stop at the crater rim viewpoint. The road then crosses the Serengeti plains, where you see your first wildebeest and zebras on the way to the gate. You reach your camp or lodge in the afternoon and, if time allows, take a short game drive before dinner.
Day 2: Full day in the Serengeti
A dawn start gives you the best light and the best chance of finding big cats. Lunch is a picnic in the bush or at a lodge, with a rest in the heat of the day, and an afternoon drive until dusk. This is the day for lions, cheetahs, giraffes and elephants, and in season the herds.
Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater and return
After a morning game drive you leave the Serengeti and drive to the Ngorongoro Crater for a short visit before the return to Arusha, or you descend into the crater early the next day on the longer version. You reach Arusha in the evening.
Shared camping safari or private lodge safari?
A shared camping safari uses public campsites and a cook, and it is the lowest cost. A private lodge safari offers a room with a bathroom, a restaurant meal and a vehicle that you control. The difference in comfort is large, and so is the difference in price. If this is your only chance to see the Serengeti, we suggest choosing the version that matches how you like to travel, because you will remember the experience for years.

Frequently asked questions
Can I see the Serengeti in 3 days?
Yes, but it is a fast trip with long drives. A flight to the Serengeti gives you more time in the park.
What is the difference between a joining and a private safari?
A joining safari shares the vehicle and the guide with other travellers, so it costs less. A private safari gives you your own vehicle and a flexible schedule.
What is the best 3 day safari for first-time visitors?
Tarangire, Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater is the easiest and most varied introduction.
What is the best 3 day itinerary?
For wildlife density and comfort, we recommend a flight to the Serengeti with a night in the park and a morning in the crater. For the lowest cost, a joining safari to Tarangire, Manyara and the crater.
What is the best 3 day safari for the Great Migration?
In January to March, stay in Ndutu or the southern Serengeti. In July to October, fly to the northern Serengeti. The central Serengeti has wildlife year-round, but not the main herds.
Can I add a day later?
Often yes. Tell us before you book and we will check availability for an extra night in the park.
